Texas Tech University is in compliance with Core Requirement #2.1.

The university was created as Texas Technological College on 10 February 1923 by an act of the legislature of the State of Texas. The university’s name was changed to Texas Tech University on September 1, 1969. The Texas Tech University System was created effective September 1, 1999, with Texas Tech University as a constituent part. A synopsis of the university history is published on p. 12 of the 2004-05 Texas Tech University Catalog, online at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/officialpublications/catalog/GenInfo.html

Legislation relating to the legal status of Texas Tech University and the Texas Tech University System is at http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/statutes/ed.toc.htm. Go to Title 109 and click on 109.001 Texas Tech University System and 109.01 Texas Tech University.

The degree granting authority for the university is vested in the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) of the State of Texas. Generally, requests to create a new degree originate from faculty within a department or college. Approval by faculty at that level passes the program on to the next highest administrative level (college or provost) for review. In the case of colleges that are organized with departments, a college committee made up of faculty reviews the proposal before it is passed on to the provost level. The Graduate School also reviews and approves all new graduate degree proposals. All new degree proposals are evaluated in the Office of the Provost before being passed on to the Board of Regents. All new degree proposals go to the THECB for final approval before they may be listed in the University Catalog. (For THECB degree program requirements see http://www.thecb.state.tx.us/UHRI/polprod/dp.htm.) The operating policy of the university with respect to new degree programs is available on line at: http://www.depts.ttu.edu/opmanual/OP36.04.htm.
